A Flower

1 Peter 1:23-25 (Isaiah 40:6-8)
Spring has arrived, at least where I am here in Tucson, and the first flower in my garden has awoken from its winter slumber. It is starting that wonderful time of year when the desert is in bloom. In the big scheme of things our lives are like that flower, too. Here one day and gone the next, a mere blip in the history of the universe. Peter talks about this fact, adding a crucial point to a couple verses found originally Isaiah. He writes, "For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. As the Scriptures say, 'People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.' And that word is the Good News that was preached to you (1 Peter 1:23-25 NLT)." I like what Peter adds when he talks about our new life lasting forever because it is from the word of God. This is an important addition because as the Word is eternal, so we become eternal with it when we give our lives to the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ. We are God's, and only our physical body will be just like the flower that is here for a short time and then fades away. So, in reality while our physical body is but a blip in the history of the universe, our spiritual body is eternal and will exist forever, as God exists forever. We are his for all time! So as Jesus did, we should make the most of our time here and be like beautiful flowers displaying the glory of God for the season that we have. But we will always have the hope that as we wither and fade our new life with Him will begin in a place where we will shine forever without fading. With the Lord in us, when faced with the tough questions in life like, "Who am I?," we have a response, "I am yours!"

A great Christian song to go with today's devotion is Who am I by Casting Crowns. This is a rather interesting video using hands to create the imagery in the song.

A Phonebook

2 Kings 22
I just pulled out the handy phone book to look up where a business was located and was thinking about what a convenience it is to have this. What if you had to ask around or drive around looking every time you wanted to go somewhere new? It would be a big pain, that's for sure. (Makes me wonder what it was like before all these helpful things were created.) Anyway, what if that were the case with the Bible? That's why God was always having people write the Word down and save it somewhere because he knew eventually it would get forgotten otherwise and it wouldn't be good to have people asking around and wondering what to do. He wanted people to be able to go look on the "scroll" whenever they needed to. We find an instance in the Bible when just such a thing happened and God's Law seemed to be forgotten. It is recorded in 2 Kings 22 . Somehow over the course of a few generations God's Law had been forgotten about and people were out doing whatever they pleased, which was making God angry. Fortunately, the kings heart was seeking the Lord, and he sent for the help of the priest, then repented and humbled himself before the Lord upon hearing the Word and realizing that the people hadn't been adhering to it. He later followed through with all kinds of measures to return the land to obeying God and His commandments. We are blessed to live in a time when almost anyone that wants can have access to the Bible and we don't need to go searching for it. We have paper copies, audio versions, electronic versions, and my favorite, the internet has it all. (I love Bible Gateway!) For us there can be no excuse for not knowing or obeying God's Word. We have no reason not to be reading and studying it all the time, because it is available wherever we go. Let us not take that for granted, but instead make use of all the great ways we can plant the Word inside us in whatever method we prefer.

A fun, classic song to go with this devotional is Basic Instructions by Burlap to Cashmere. Sorry, can't find a video for this one.

A Salt Shaker

Colossians 4:5-6
As I was preparing my food I used a bunch of seasoning on it and some must have been old because I didn't even notice the flavor, fortunately the salt was still fine so my food wasn't totally bland. The Bible mentions that as Christians we need to be like salt to the outside world, seasoning God's grace on those around us. We must always be careful for we never know who is listening or watching our behavior.

5Behave yourselves wisely [living prudently and with discretion] in your relations with those of the outside world (the non-Christians), making the very most of the time and seizing (buying up) the opportunity.
6Let your speech at all times be gracious (pleasant and winsome), seasoned [as it were] with salt, [so that you may never be at a loss] to know how you ought to answer anyone [who puts a question to you]. (from the Amplified Bible)

Our talk should be attractive, lively, and inspiring to unbelievers. So many have the impression that our faith is dull, boring, and stifling, which is completely untrue. However, some of us may live and act as though it is! Honestly, some churches I have been to could fall into this group. Church should be invigorating, inspiring, uplifting, with people blowing the roof off the house worshiping God! We should be the most joyous, seasoned people anyone could come across because honestly we have a monopoly on the joy market. There is nothing more joyous than having a relationship with God and having an invitation into his eternal kingdom. We should also come across as sanctified and holy in how we behave, so it is obvious that we are set apart by God, living for him, not worldly things. What the world needs to see is Christians "marketing" our faith through action and lifestyle, and using words as needed to give an answer as to why we live like we do. So don't wait, always be out there being the salt and shining God's light on those around you, giving him glory. It won't be long before others want to know what's up with you.

Food

John 6:27
But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval (NLT). It's no surprise to me during the tough economic times we're in, to hear on the news that things like shoplifting are on the rise.

http://www.wnyc.org/news/articles/123322
I can sympathize with those so desperate that they're stealing food and have helped others in need of that when they have asked. However, some of the stealing comes down to how important material goods and status are in our lives. There are some things we can learn to just live without. Maybe those new shoes, designer clothes, gadgets, pay-per-view, or other luxuries may have to take a backseat to everyday living expenses. Maybe it means finally giving up expensive bad habits like drinking and smoking. Even small things like drinking water instead of lattes and soda can add up. ( Check these sites for ideas: http://www.kiplinger.com/magazine/archives/2009/02/save-fifty-a-day-and-feel-no-pain.html and http://www.feedthepig.org ) I know things are tough, I've had to scrutinize everything I'm spending money on to make ends meet. For those seriously desperate the church, food pantries, and the government are also there. Asking others for help should always be first as stealing is a bad choice to solve your problem and could make things worse for you and your family if you get caught (and that's not even mentioning the 8th commandment). There are also those using the difficult economy as a reason to steal and they will deserve what comes to them. As Christians we need to be there for our neighbors as much as we can during these trying times. We need to be even more willing to answer the call from God to show our faith in action through good deeds. God's people need to be about bringing hope, unity, and a helping hand in our world. Our nation has faced challenges before and we can again if we are willing to rise up and work together. We also need to spend much time in prayer. God can heal and help us and our country if we make the choice to seek him first. As our leaders roll out plans to repair this problem let us also keep them in our prayers that God will give them wisdom.

A Washcloth

Ezekiel 36:25
Just as we get dirty physically each day from all kinds of sources, so too do we find many ways to dirty ourselves on the inside. God always has an offer on the table to clean us up and put us in right relationship with him again.

25I'll pour pure water over you and scrub you clean. I'll give you a new heart, put a new spirit in you. I'll remove the stone heart from your body and replace it with a heart that's God-willed, not self-willed. I'll put my Spirit in you and make it possible for you to do what I tell you and live by my commands (Ezekiel 36:25-27 MSG)

No different than a shower, we will experience true cleansing and refreshment when God has purged us of the wrong things we have done. As we seek him and seek to keep his commands he works on our heart and spirit drawing us closer to him and further from our flesh. It is in that place where we have left ourselves behind and have been washed by him that an overwhelming peace and joy is felt. It is not easy to stay in that place as our flesh is always trying to pull us into the pleasures of sin. It is almost as if we are two people, like Jeckyll and Hyde. Yet as long as we are in this world of imperfection we will struggle and often repeat the process of sinning and cleansing. It is most fortunate for us that Jesus bore the weight of our sins upon himself and stands before the Father on our behalf. Jesus has set us free from bondage to sin and death and opened the gate for us to live a joyous life in him. Don't despair, pray for Jesus to free you from your guilt and shame and be renewed and restored. When you take your shower pray that God will be washing you on the inside while you are taking care of the outside.

Rain

2 Corinthians 12:10
When I start picking passages like this for my devotional it is usually because my health is becoming poor again and so I begin to look for verses to find comfort in the storm.

7Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself! 8Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. 9And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness " Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.10Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Cor. 12:7-10 NASB).

I have had numerous health issues throughout my life but starting about 2 years ago now, things really took a turn for the worse and there were more than a few times that I figured I was a goner. As a Christian the thought of death doesn't bother me, in fact to be rid of the pain once and for all would be a blessing. However, as that hasn't happened yet I look to the Lord and his grace to get me through, yet again. For those of you who have suffered a bit in this life I know it is hard to keep finding the "silver lining" amidst the clouds and maintain a joy-filled Christian attitude. Thankfully, we are not alone in our pain and our suffering as so many great saints have gone that road and left us scriptures full of inspirational stories of overcoming trials. (read about Paul, Job, David - just to name a few) As Paul infers here he becomes stronger and closer to God in these hardships and I definitely have found that true for myself. I have to admit I don't really like that truth as I greatly dislike being uncomfortable. Like Paul, I have prayed numerous times for healing from the Lord even if that meant "going home," but like Paul, I can't seem to get relief. For those of us in this predicament we need to use our condition to bring comfort to others going through their own suffering. How we handle difficulties may lead others to Christ as they see us being able to go on day after day despite our afflictions. Whenever I can I let others know that the only way I am making it is because God's strength is within me. If our bodies are his temple then whatever happens to us is in his hands. There's nothing better and more reassuring than that. Our problems are just times of testing and shaping as God is molding us into the people he wants us to be. You can persevere, He is with you and for you! Don't let the rain bring you down, go dance in it and splash in the puddles! Today spend time in prayer for anyone you can think of who is suffering and ask God how you may bring his peace to them. Stay strong!

Luke 5:1-11

Today Pastor Rob preached an excellent message on leading like Jesus and it was also a dedication to the retiring Senior Pastor Ron Hart who had led the church for 30 years. (I'll try to share what I can recognizing that I am in poor health right now. It has been a very difficult day for me as I share this. Fortunately I have KLOVE to listen to and that always keeps me going whether times are good or bad.)

The first thing we see in the passage is that Jesus had a vision for people. He saw how needy the people were and how they needed a Savior. He also recognized that while He was God, he was also human and would need help if he was going to reach all of those in need. His next job would be to seize the resources needed to carry out his mission. This was when he asked the fisherman to use their boats and then called them to be his disciples. The next thing Jesus had to face was reluctant obedience. The disciples weren't exactly excited about putting out their nets again having caught nothing during the night. They did it anyway but it wasn't exactly with enthusiasm. God still often has to deal with this in his followers today, but he can work even with reluctant obedience because his power works through us as long as we are faithful to carry out what he calls us to do. Finally, Jesus demonstrated godly power which caused people to want to follow him. The Lord set a good example in this passage of what we need to do to lead and what we can expect to encounter. If we have God's vision, if we use the resources he has placed all around us and in us, and use the power he gives us, then we too can be successful in reaching the world around us. Pray that all of us as Christians will look at people as Jesus did and do the things that Jesus modeled so that they may too become followers and have the hope of salvation.

Jeans

Ephesians 6:11-12
I went out for the evening to watch the sunset in the desert as I try to do whenever possible. Tonight, between the various prickly things I managed to run into, and the pesky mosquitoes, I was quite happy to have very little flesh exposed. Sure it would be nice to wear shorts and t-shirts in the desert since it's hot, but unfortunately you want protection those things just don't offer. Paul talks about some protection God makes available to us, not for insect protection, but it will work against a greater pest, the devil.

11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:11-17 NIV).

It is important for us to always be prepared for anything the enemy throws our way. As we try to make an impact in this world Satan will always be after us since we are a threat to him. God doesn't leave us defenseless, he offers what we need to stand. However, if we fail to take all the necessary items we will leave open a place for the enemy to penetrate. If we don't know God's Word it would be like going into battle without your sword, or in our time, your gun. It is critical to have the Word inside you, so you are always armed. Our enemy has all kinds of tactics like temptations, doubts, evil thoughts, and desires that take the right words to combat. Being true to your faith and standing up for what is right will always be a struggle. With God's help we can win and reflect his glory to the lives of those around us. Pray for yourself and all the saints that we will press on to victory and obtain our crowns of glory.

Shoes

Psalm 37:23
(23) The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. (24) Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. We all know how difficult life can be. I certainly don't know how I would make it without God leading me and looking out for me. It is so reassuring to know that God in his infinite grace finds joy in directing my path and guiding me on this challenging journey I'm on. Imagine that - the God of the universe takes delight in YOUR life! GOD is there for you step by step, every moment, every detail. How can that not fill your heart with gladness? With that in mind the best thing I can do for others, and the purpose of this blog, is to help anyone who comes my way to be redirected to the one whose leading those shoes I'm walking in. It is always my prayer that through my life people both young and old will see a reason to allow Christ to be the Lord and leader of their lives as well. It's why I continue to do the job I do and honestly I think that's why God gives me enough strength to keep making it through each day. I pray for you dear brothers and sisters that you will let God have your soul and your soles - allowing him to reach out and take your hand and walk the road of life with you.
It is encouraging to find in his Word stories of so many heroes of the faith and how he lead them to victory. (Some of them are featured in the video below.) We can learn so much from them. Spend time reading about a favorite Bible hero today and identify some godly characteristics about them that you could pray for God to help you add to your life.

A Trophy - A Special Dedication to all the kids God's blessed me with ministering to

Numbers 6:24-26, 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
Today was one of those difficult days for me as a staff at the childrens home I work at, as it was time to say farewell to a couple kids that I had spent a lot of time with over the past year. Many kids at the home come and go so quickly that you have little time to attach to them, but others who are around for years, who you've built a relationship with, are hard to see go. No matter how old you get "Goodbye" never gets any easier to say, and I've had to say it a lot. When you're passion is touching the lives of others with God's love and that bond is created, it is difficult to be separated from them. Paul felt this when writing to his friends in Thessalonica saying, "Do you have any idea how very homesick we became for you, dear friends? Even though it hadn't been that long and it was only our bodies that were separated from you, not our hearts, we tried our very best to get back to see you. You can't imagine how much we missed you! Who do you think we're going to be proud of when our Master Jesus appears if it's not you? You're our pride and joy! (1 Thl 2:17-20 The Message)" Let me dedicate that verse to any young person whose life God's blessed me with the opportunity to touch over the years (and by now there are many). Each of you is like a trophy on the shelf in my life, something special, a fond memory, a gift from God. I am proud to see the Lord at work in your lives and know "that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart...(Philippians 1:6-7 NIV)" We may no longer be together physically, but spiritually we will always be one. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers and I will always be thankful to God for the time he gave us to spend together. I leave you with this blessing from God: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace (Numbers 6:24-26 NIV)." Take some time today thinking of those who have come and gone from your life and offer a prayer on their behalf.

A Treadmill

Mark 9:2
Ever have one of those days where you feel like you're getting no where fast or you're just stuck in a rut? You're definitely not alone. In fact I think I've had whole weeks and months like that sometimes. I think this happens because we just get overloaded at times and just start short-circuiting because our body wants to shut down for a while and not have to think about anything. It may signal a good time to pull away from what we're doing, relax, and to think and pray about where we are and where we're heading to. It's something Jesus did a lot that I'm trying to incorporate more into my life. He got away from the crowds and the people demanding of his time and spent it getting close to his Father. For me that means a hike away from others in the desert and some photography time. In fact I'm even pondering a new blog about escaping life and enjoying some spiritual r-n-r (rest and relaxation). A retreat, a vacation, or a long walk may do the trick. What I'd really like is 40 days and 40 nights - wouldn't we all! Jesus had one occasion away with his disciples that was really awesome. "After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them (Mark 9:2 NIV)." Intense? That's where our idea of a mountain top experience comes from. This is the kind of thing we need to do regularly to experience God more fully. We need to get away from everything, to step away from the daily grind, to get off the treadmill of life and seek God until we feel the difference - that we have been transformed and renewed by the experience. When can you fit into your week time to really escape life and seek God? It's time to schedule a mountaintop experiece of your own.

A Colander

1 Thessalonians 5:23
A colander is a simple yet handy tool I use frequently to clean my veggies before preparing them for a salad. This is similar to what God does to each of us when we give our lives to him. Often times it takes a good scrubbing and even repeated washings to get us clean but that is what we need so we will be pure, ready to stand before him. Paul in trying to prepare believers for the second coming wrote, "And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God]; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) (1 Thessalonians 5:23 Amplified Bible)." Paul left some excellent instructions in chapter 5 that would help us in the dark times we live in to stay pure and ready for Christ's return. He spent much of the conversation warning his brothers to be alert for they would never know the hour that the day of the Lord would come. We must strive to be self-controlled, though that can be so difficult in the defiled world we live in with its many temptations. We must pray and help each other to stay on course, seeking God and giving him glory in all circumstances. Today, read and take to heart 1 Thessalonians chapter 5. "May the grace of our Lord be with you, now and always may you stay, blameless till he comes." (Omega, Rebecca St. James)

A Pillow

Matthew 8:20
Ok, I have a confession, I love my pillow, it is just perfect for me. I can go other places and try to sleep on other pillows and it just doesn't work. I do overnight shifts in the group home I work at fairly often and have to take my personal pillow. Let's face it, we are creatures that like to be comfortable and be pampered and catered to. It's not easy as a Christian to step outside our comfort zone yet that is so often what we are called to do. Jesus made it clear that there was a cost to discipleship, after all he laid out a pretty tough example to follow. He made it clear to potential disciples that following him wasn't going to be glamorous. He wasn't going to be living the life of a celebrity. No first class travel, no 5 star hotels, no relaxing mineral bath at the end of the day, not even a pillow. He said to one, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head (Matthew 8:20 NIV)." I used to think I could go that extreme, but the older I get the more I like the comforts of home. Fortunately, God knows what we can and can't handle, and while he pushes us to step outside our box, he calls us to missions that are challenging, but not overwhelming. Case in point, an old friend of mine, Matt runs a childrens home in Cambodia, I work for a childrens home in Arizona. God knows both of us want to touch the lives of kids in need with the love of Christ. God also knows I have health problems and being where I can get proper medical attention is a good idea. While it would be exciting and maybe more challenging to work abroad, the Lord has put me where I can make a difference and still get the food and health products I need to stay functional. After all, I would be of little use somewhere else if I was always sick. What I'm trying to get at is to be ready and willing to accept the call to discipleship that the Lord places on your life, knowing that it won't be easy, but that it will be something that with God's help you will be able to do. God wants our faith to grow but he also says he'll only dish out what he knows is right for us. So as you hit the pillow tonight, thank the Lord that he gave up comfort for the cross and pray that he will give you the strength to be extreme in whatever assignment he calls you to. For some extra encouragement listen to Voice Of Truth by Casting Crowns today in your devotional time.

Luke 4:14-44

In this continuing Sunday series on the book of Luke we examined the passage in chapter 4 where Jesus returned to his home of Nazareth and went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and was asked to read the Scripture. He read from Isaiah 61:1-2 and finished up with the surprise statement that the scripture you just heard has now been fulfilled (by me). Needless to say this took people off guard as well as his following remarks about a prophet not being accepted in his hometown and the people had enough and were ready to throw him off a cliff. Pastor Rob taught on what we should take away from this passage to apply to our Christian walk today. There are a number of things Jesus displayed in his actions, actions that we should be taking as Christians today since we are called to be like him. First, we must be filled with the Holy Spirit, otherwise anything we try to do will fail as it would only be of our own efforts. We must be completely under the Spirit's control at all times and in all areas of our life. No small task. We must be completely focused on and sold out to God and doing his will. Next we have the job of reaching out and evangelizing others so that they may have the opportunity to come to know Christ. Part of that is bringing hope and encouragement to them; that they have an opportunity to be made whole by the Lord's power. Another point is edification - we need to be building up those around us. The only thing we should be tearing down is the walls that divide us rather than each other. The next is that Christ set us free from our bondage to sin and death to equip us. Yes, we have a purpose in God's kingdom designed to bring him glory. I could go into this a lot more, but if you feel your life has no meaning then know right now that only God can bring this to your life. If you're running your own life you may find all kinds of things to be involved in but you will never be satisfied in the way that God brings satisfaction to those that live according to his plan for their life. The final point is exaltation. This one is a favorite of mine. Are you like me and can't wait for Sunday to come around again so you can worship? One of the ways this happens is that if you have been seeking after God all week through prayer, reading his word etc. then you will be bursting at the seams, ready to worship come Sunday. All of your life should be an act of worship. Lift him up each day so that others are drawn to him simply by what is reflected in your own life. Set your mind this week on being a light in this world, so that others will ask what the source of your hope and joy is and you will be able to give God the glory.

A Box of Chocolate

Jeremiah 31:3
Alright, yesterday's devotion may have been perfect for those in a relationship, particularly a marriage, but what if you spent this Valentine's on your own? No matter what your relationship status is take a moment to spend time today with the lover of your soul. He brings a love that is always there, one that will always be better and truer than human love and will never leave us or forsake us, one that is eternal. In Jeremiah 31:3 God states that, "I've never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love and more love (The Message)!" Avoid being depressed if you didn't get a Valentine, flowers, or a box of chocolate because God already gave you the best gift there could ever be, his Son. God stopped at nothing to show his love for you and ensure you would always have a lasting relationship. God wants to draw us to him with his love, he doesn't force us to come, he simply waits with open arms, waits for us to knock at the door, waits for us to make contact with him. A Ring

1 Corinthians 13:7
Valentine's Day is here and it is a great time to think about what true love should be and there's no better place to find that than 1 Corinthians 13. For the difficult times we live in nothing could be more important on this Valentine's Day than reminding yourself about how love should be able to endure anything. "Love never gives up, never looses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance (1 Cor. 13:7 NLT)" Bad economy, unemployment, sickness, financial problems, bad days shouldn't stop love. Real love makes it through all those things. It grows stronger during difficulties, it pulls together to overcome the obstacles. Let the rings on your fingers be a reminder of your marriage vows to make it in good times and bad times. When all is said and done the Bible emphasizes that love is the greatest, above all, and is one thing that lasts forever. Paul talks about how you could do all kinds of great things and have all kinds of knowledge but if you don't love others you have nothing. Everything we do as Christians should be a direct result of our love for God and for other people. Our love should be unconditional and keep no record of wrongs, just like God's love. We must be forgiving and forgetting each other sins and love even those that we've had disagreements with, otherwise we're no different than those of the world. Think of ways you can make this a day of love like no other, not only for your spouse or boy or girlfriend, but for everyone you come in contact with.

Here are several great songs about love for your Valentine's Day:

A Toilet

James 3:9
The whole book of James, although small, is just filled with the ways to be the perfect Christian. Perhaps one of the best known chapters in James deals with keeping one's tongue under control. If we are going to have a positive impact on the world around us than we have to live differently than everyone else. No one is going to come to know Christ if they can't tell someone who professes to be a Christian apart from someone who is not. One big thing that we have to learn to control is what we say. Scripture after scripture warn about not letting any unwholesome talk come from your mouth. Being a potty mouth, a gossip, a liar and such will ruin any chances you have of leading others to Christ. Jesus said, "It's not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes out of your mouth...Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the toilet. But the words you speak come from the heart - that's what defiles you (Matthew 15:11,17,18)." Our mouths need to be used to uplift and encourage others and tell of the greatness of God, not to tear others down or ruin them. The whole of James chapter 3 goes into this at great length. James says, "...but no one can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right (James 3:8-10 NLT)!" It is important for us to bless others and to be peacemakers in this world. We must pray that God will help us to only say things that will be a blessing to others and when we do mess up that we will use our mouths to ask for forgiveness of those we have hurt. Read through all of James chapter 3. If you don't have a Bible handy you can go to BibleGateway and read it in any translation you wish! A powerful song to go with today's devotion is The Blessing by John Waller.

A GPS (or a map for you old schoolers)

John 16:13
I went out for the afternoon to an area of Saguaro National Park that I haven't been to in ages and have to say how helpful it is that they give you a map to guide your visit. The desert isn't exactly a place you want to trek off into without having some details. Likewise its a big help that Jesus didn't take off and leave us to make it through life on our own, he left us with the Holy Spirit. Between the Spirit and the Bible, God has provided us an excellent guidance system for our stay on earth. Most people get into trouble traveling because they missed something on their map or GPS or didn't consult them. The same can be said for people who try to run their own life, choosing not to use the tools God has provided to aid us in living the best life possible. As Christians we must be in tune with the promptings of the Spirit and continually be studying the Bible so we can stay on the straight and narrow. Part of the job of the Spirit is that of guide who nudges us helping us stay on course, but we must be attentive to that inner voice or it won't matter. He brings to us what he has heard from the Lord to help us along the way. "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. (John 16:13-14 NLT)." The Spirit allows for Christ to dwell in us and for us to be one in the body of Christ. It may not be easy for us to grasp the truth or fully understand but we must trust that God is at work in us through the Spirit and that the triune God is part of us and we are a part of it. Pray that God will continue to reveal the truth to you and that he will accomplish his work in you. A Blanket

Isaiah 49:13
I work for a children's home with kids of all ages. In the one house I work in there is a girl who is like 2 years old and quite often she wanders around the house carrying her blanket and even chewing on it from time to time. She reminds me of Linus from the Peanuts who always had to have his blanket, even when it got dirty and smelly, he couldn't let go of it. While I like to wear one of those Snuggies when it's cold you won't see me carrying it around otherwise because my security blanket is much better. In fact, he holds onto me when life gets scary, rather than me hanging on to him. God is always faithfully hanging on to his people bringing them peace and comfort like a soft fuzzy blanket. "Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted (Isaiah 49:13 KJV)." Jesus knows and understands our broken, human condition. He has walked in our shoes and is there to bring us grace in our times of distress. He wants to lead us home where we can feel his love. Unfortunately, we all too often take our relationship for granted and forget to bring a sacrifice of praise for the security, comfort and love he consistently shows us in good times and bad. He is always worthy of our praise for all he has done. In this cold winter weather as you snuggle up and get cozy in your blanket remember who is warming your heart and soul. Rest in his arms and offer a prayer and song of thanksgiving to God for all he has done and will do in you.

An Umbrella

Luke 8:22-25
It has been windy and stormy lately here in Tucson, which doesn't happen a lot. When the rains come here you usually have to dig around to find your raincoats and umbrellas. In the evening the weather reminded me of when Jesus and his disciples were crossing a lake and he was asleep when a mighty storm came up that was filling their boat with water. The disciples in a panic woke Jesus to inform him of the situation. "When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. The storm stopped and all was calm (Luke 8:23 NLT)!" He proceeded to question the disciples about their faith, and then most likely went back to his siesta as if nothing had happened. First, what I see in that story is that I wish I could be more relaxed when the boat of life is being tossed around. To not be concerned and know that everything will be fine even when my world is falling apart all around me takes amazing faith. Yet if you've been a Christian for a while, you probably could make a good list of when life seemed like a hurricane but in the end the Lord carried you through it. Next it's important to know that when the waves are overwhelming us that we can cry out to Jesus for help. Even when our faith is small and we get scared and panicked, the Lord can bring calm and peace to the situation. Lastly, we must remember that if you've given your life to Christ, you are not your own, he who is greater than the world, he who overcame the world, he who the winds and waves obey is living in you. Allow that thought to set you free from worry. When fear and panic set in remember these words from Junior Asparagus of Veggie Tales, "God is bigger than the Boogie Man, he's bigger than Godzilla or the monsters on TV, God is bigger than the Boogie Man, and he's watching out for you and me." Next time the winds and rain whip up realize that your umbrella and Gore-Tex rain gear don't offer near the protection that God does. Rely on him to be your shelter in the storm.

Luke Chapter 4

(As I mentioned in a previous post my devotion that I write on Sunday that most of you will read Monday will be based on the Sunday message by my Pastors and not on an object as I do the rest of the week.)

Today's message was on overcoming temptation which is definitely a challenge for most of us as Christians. It's a fact that all of us are tempted and on a regular basis; the hard part is being a conqueror and stopping the temptation from becoming a sin. The Bible says the Devil is roaming around like a roaring lion waiting for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). Once entrapped by sin it can be hard to get out, as many sins become addictions that can drive you away from God. Jesus understands all this and sympathizes with our condition as he too was tempted. As both God and man Satan did tempt him and kept trying throughout his life to get Jesus to stumble and rebel against God. The way Jesus fought off Satan is the same way we should, with scripture. The Bible is our sword and by planting God's Word in our heart we can defend ourselves and stand strong in the face of temptation. There is no doubt we will be tested as Christians to see whether we will stick to the will of God. Will we be like Jesus, so focused on doing the will of God that the Devil doesn't stand a chance, or will we fall victim to him? We can be over comers; that is what God desires for us to be. Realize too, that God's grace is sufficient for us, that he is forgiving of our sins when we do slip up. He understands there are times our flesh overwhelms us and we wrongfully satisfy its desires. When that does happen seek God right away for forgiveness and get right back on track. Don't get stuck on a detour for long, you may not make it back. I've had my own struggles and know that the quicker you repent and get back on course the better. Seek God in all your trials and temptations and ask for his help, admit you can't defeat sin on your own, that you need his power. Since the Word is our best weapon against the Devil, if you haven't been, use this devotional or some other way to memorize scripture regularly so when you are attacked you will be armed and ready for battle. With God's help you can achieve victory!
Some ideas of scripture to memorize in the face of temptation: 1 Corinthians 10:13, 1 John 2:16 (the ways the Devil tempts us), James 1:12, Hebrews 4:15, Hebrews 2:18

A Trashcan

Philippians 3:8
Today's meditation is a hard word from Paul discussing putting our desires and quest to get somewhere in this world behind us for the sake of following Christ. His letter talks about his early days of being a Pharisee and very respected among his people to throwing that all away. Paul writes, "We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault. I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. (8) Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him (Philippians 3:3-9 NLT)." In our day this would be the equivalent of being a celebrity with tons of money and fame and being asked to give it all up and toss it away to seek after Christ. Would you do it? Have you had to make a tough choice like that in your spiritual walk? On a smaller scale, years ago I walked away from a stable, steady paying job to do youth ministry full-time. It was a big risk, moving to a new town, not knowing how I'd be received or even how long I'd last. Then after a few years there my health and ability to do my job fell apart and I found myself unemployed and in poor health with no real clue where to go next. Yet, I wouldn't have gone back and done things differently because I knew in my heart God sent me there and would continue to provide for me wherever he sent me. Understand that Jesus never promised life to be smooth sailing, he said there would be sacrifices, he made the ultimate one, but he did promise to be with us always. Pray that when God sends a challenge your way that you will have courage to count all you've gained in this world as trash and follow after the one who made a sacrifice far greater than any of us will ever make, yet did it with humility. A good song to go with today's devotion is "Good Life" by Audio Adrenaline.

A Hairbrush

Luke 12:7
As I was brushing my hair today which has become quite full and wild it made me laugh about the fact that God knows the number of hairs on my head. That's something I'm glad I'll never have to count. For those of you that are follicley (is that a word?) challenged, my apologies, at least God won't have to spend any time keeping track of yours. Luke 12:7 comes in a section exclaiming both of the power of God and how much he cares for the creatures of the earth. Jesus was speaking to a crowd saying, "Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows (Luke 12:6-7 NIV). Christ wanted us to understand that God cares immensely for us and even knows us better than we know ourselves! God is not some distant God, out there somewhere, but instead he is right here and involved in our everyday lives right down to the details. Have some inferiority problems? Well have no doubt that God considers you valuable no matter what you or anyone else thinks. Remember that you are God's prized posession, so much so that Jesus even died for you! God's desire is for an intimate relationship with you. Spend time today pondering God's extravagent love for you and whether you're hairy like me or not take some time to appreciate God's desire to be involved in even the smallest things in your life.

Keys

Matthew 6:19
A friend and I went to have vehicles inspected for emissions today, fortunately for me things went fine, but my friend had a company vehicle and the key to the gas tank was not on the keyring so he couldn't have his test done. Bummer. I got to thinking about the sad fact that in our sinful world we have to have all our stuff locked up to discourage thieves. Actually what I've found more tragic is the amount of things we have to have. Until I started moving and living in different places it didn't matter much, but honestly now I long for the more simple days when I had a bedroom with some clothes and toys and that was all (especially the few times I've had to pack a Uhaul). Even with the amount of items I sell, thanks to eBay and Craig's List, there's still too much of it. The more we own the more we become tied down and the more we stand to loose if something bad happens. Jesus suggests we avoid this as well, "Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven...Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be (Matthew 6:19-21)." In our life we accumulate all kinds of possessions that in the end really don't matter. I wish now I'd have paid more attention to these verses. Take it from me, do yourself a favor and don't buy, buy, buy. Your life will be a whole lot simpler and your pants won't keep falling from the weight of all those keys you have to carry. I can't imagine how many keys I have around my house, many not even in use now. Thankfully, we won't need locks and keys in heaven, our treasure will always be safe there. I also don't think we'll have to worry about packing it up in moving vans and having to transport it everywhere we go, either. Today think about ways you can simplify your life and be content with less. Gone, by Switchfoot is the perfect song to listen to today.

Glasses

2 Corinthians 5:7
Humans are very visual creatures which it makes it extra challenging to surrender to something that can't be seen, yet that's exactly what's required to be a Christian. Paul states that, "It's what we trust in but don't yet see that keeps us going (2 Cor. 5:7 The Message)." This is partly why our testimony becomes so important in aiding others to come to the faith. It is hard to just give in to something heavenly when it is an unknown. When believers share their experiences with God, like how they came to believe and the things that God has done and is doing in their lives it makes it more real for a seeker. When they understand how the unseen promises of God keep us going everyday and how his hands are shaping us and enabling us to do great things and that he is always there to pick us up when life lets us down, they will get a picture of who God is. Like glasses help a person see, so we as Christians need to help those who don't know God catch a glimpse of who he is. Pray that God will give you an opportunity to give some insight into the divine to someone who has not yet committed their life to Christ. Cleaner

Mark 11:25
It was a beautiful day so I was outside cleaning my vehicle, which so quickly gets dirty in the desert environment I live in. I started thinking about spiritual cleansing and forgiveness. All of us get dirty from sin just like the grime that forms on my truck, even just sitting still in the driveway. Unlike a car, we get cleaned in a rather interesting process. You see it's not enough for us just to pray and ask God to forgive us. In order for us to be cleaned by God we have to clear others who we're holding a grudge against or not forgiving them of something they've done. Mark 11:25 states, "When you stand to pray, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him. Then your Father in heaven will forgive your sins also (NLV)." God expects us to be forgiving, as He is forgiving. When Jesus was asked by Peter how many times he should forgive someone who wrongs him Jesus said, "seventy times seven times." (Jesus followed up his response by telling a parable about an unmerciful servant which you can read at Matthew 18:21-35.) I don't know about you but I'd have to keep a pretty good record to know when someone had wronged me 490 times. I think what Jesus meant was our willingness to forgive should keep on going and going and going - yeah like that Energizer bunny. Besides, you'll feel a whole lot better just getting it off your mind and dwelling on it no more. Then you can pray with a soft heart and receive cleansing from God. Spend some time thinking and if you've got some unsettled issues stored up within you, clean your memory banks. Forgive and be forgiven, clean and be cleansed and your old rust bucket will be shiny and new.

Coins (Change)

2 Corinthians 9:6
Tonight I was out an had an opportunity that doesn't happen to me too often and that was to help someone asking for some spare change. Since I have a big heart and not a big paycheck I'm kind of glad that I rarely end up in this position. I like to give away money and give generously in the name of the Lord. While things have been tight for me I am fortunate that God provides and I have the essentials. I also have faith that what I give away will be given back to me and then some. "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously (2 Cor. 9:6 NIV)." I had heard a story on the radio earlier in the day about churches that were giving away all they could to help those struggling to make ends meet. In this kind of economic climate it is no too surprising that more people are having a tough time getting by and it will take a lot more than just government assistance to meet the growing need. For all of us this is a time to sow as generously as we are able and pray that the reaping will be an adding of souls to the Kingdom of God. When things are difficult and many are "tightening their belts," Christians can be a powerful witness to those around us by continuing to give cheerfully knowing where our treasure comes from. Whether it's money, prayers or an act of kindness keep your eyes open to those around you and be ready when God presents you with an opportunity to show his love for humanity through you. Be blessed. A great song to listen to with today's devotion is "Give Me Your Eyes" by Brandon Heath (video & lyrics) / Give Me Your Eyes (MP3)

Luke 1-2 Choices

Another wonderful message this Sunday from Luke's gospel on choices that Jesus made and how they impact us now. What I will focus on in this post is the second section of the Pastor's message on the kind of people God chooses to carry out his work in the world. Think you're not a leader, or you're poor with words, or lacking skills, or unattractive, or too shy, think you can't possibly be of use to God? Think again. Remember what God sees in you is different than what people see in you. If your heart is tuned to God, you're saved, and you are seeking to live your life for him, that is where it starts. Having surrendered to him and given up your own management of your life puts you on the path to be of use in the Lord's service. When you place yourself in God's hands, allowing him to be the potter and you the clay, he is able to shape you into the person he's calling you to be. The next thing is being willing to pay the price or make the sacrifice needed to follow him. Jesus said, later in Luke, that no one who puts his hand to the plow then looks back is fit to serve. To follow the Lord you must let go of the past and take off in the direction he sends you in. You must give up the old for the new. The other requirement, and one I've had the hardest time with, is trusting his promises. I've gone through some tough times in my life and have often prayed but doubted anything would happen. I say the prayer, sometimes having prayed the same thing for what seems to be an eternity, only to hear no response. It's easy to give up and forget that God's timing is not our timing and to trust he will come through at the right moment. When you are in the midst of struggle and begin to doubt God will keep his promises, start thinking of all the times he's come through for you in the past. That has often helped me to keep faith and to battle on. God has a perfect track record, so there's no reason to expect anything other than the right outcome. So choose on this day who you will serve. It's totally up to you. Just know that God has already chosen you and is ready and waiting to give you an opportunity to live an amazing adventure to make a difference in this world that will impact all eternity. Will you be like Mary and respond by saying "be it unto me according to thy word, Lord?" I pray you will.
